If you were a kid in the nineties you may have been witness to this TV first! Probably the most terrifying night of your life to date and a Halloween that secured your life long fondness for the spooky season, and a life long fear of plumbing.

A British mockumentary supernatural horror television film, first broadcast on BBC1 on Halloween night, 1992. Written by Stephen Volk, and directed by Lesley Manning, the drama was produced for the BBC anthology series Screen One by Richard Broke, Ruth Baumgarten and Derek Nelson.

FUN FACTS

• Now obsolete, the 081 811 8181 phone number was real (and the standard one for genuine BBC shows); the first thing people were told when they rang up was "this is not real" although they were still allowed to tell their stories. However, there were only five operators receiving calls, so some viewers trying to get through only received the 'engaged' tone, indirectly helping to spread confusion.

• The BBC switchboard took an estimated 1,000,000 phone enquiries/comments on the night of transmission.

• It earned the dubious honour of being the first TV programme to be cited in the British Medical Journal as having caused Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in children.
