Why this place matters

The vision of an artist & a skateboarder became reality in 2004. A decade (and a bit) later, this not-for-profit community space has become an established and much-loved part of Cardiff’s DNA. Focused on supporting the skateboarding scene, creating a nurturing space for artists and creatives, and a social space where everyone feels a warm welcome.

Building Community Through Skate, Art & Shared Space

A small glimpse into our community! Created to celebrate our 10 year anniversary in 2024.

“Dear, dear Spit. Back before you were, when you were just the dream of Nia and Christian, and you didn't have a name, to now, and all the in between. Your rainbow chairs, Donald Street sofas, doors from skips, charity shop mugs. Steve and Christian up ladders, Curtis on his bike, watching. And Shaun and Dean and Amy, and Karin, and the cats, and the chips, all the chips, and the dishes that held the chips, and the caravans, and Hangover Lounge - all the bloody Marys and all the summer afternoons. The pond, and the bridges, and the burns and the garden Emma's carefully tended, and the Skate Rats who've grown up and left or stayed. Feasts, and food, Thom at the pizza oven, covered in soot, and the art, and Susie, and The Bit, hanging out, fixing, making, eating, talking, working stuff out, pouring everything in.

What a joy you've been”.

“I first met the Spit & Sawdust crew through Made in Roath 9 years ago and have had a studio space here pretty much since then, everyone's so supportive and there's always a great energy about the place even in the dead of night. From building coffins, pigs eyeballs, drilling holes in the walls for microphones (sanctioned and actually done by Christian!!), Britney Spears on a cello, putting up with aggro d'n'b MC's and housing my collection of obscure 90's self help cassette tapes, I'm so grateful and lucky. It means a lot to be a part of a culture that drives and encourages emerging artists and I love the place”.
